New CLS-Class models are works of art Classic coupe with power and luxury
Some descriptions of the new CLS-Class compare the models to a piece of great art ... a masterfully-sculpted metal object that is meant to be used, not just admired.
Head out for a spin in a CLS model and, as with the best pieces in an art museum, there will be admirers aplenty, people who want to gaze admiringly at its sleek lines, ask questions about its meaty performance and peek into the sumptuous interior.
The CLS is the latest from the Mercedes-Benz dream factory, created by German engineering teams who let their imaginations soar wildly. A mere glance at the new CLS reveals that this is a rather special automobile with its powerful arched roof and finely crafted lines; the famous three-pointed-star badge instantly confirms that this is also a vehicle with power aplenty and, of course, impeccable safety credentials.
The model falls into the coupe category of vehicle - a general term applied to cars with radically sloping roofs. Somehow, the term coupe does not quite do justice to the executive-level CLS, so we will settle for the term Grand Coupe which more adequately captures the majesty of the model: it might look like a sleek sportster from the outside, but the two rear-seat passengers have ample room to stretch their legs and elbows.
User-friendly
The occupants can relax in the knowledge that, up front, the driver will be sitting behind the wheel of one of the most user-friendly, and safest, cars on the road. Take the control panel, for example, which is in an easy-to-read format that allows the driver to check speed, or adjust controls, in a split second.
The instrument panel itself is a revelation, with sporty, pinstriped black-and-white dials. The driver reads controls from a seat that is adjustable four different ways, with an electrical system that allows it to be moved to precisely the right position for individual body shape.
The CLS steering wheel also makes a firm nod in the direction of the Mercedes-Benz sporting heritage with its leather-trimmed three spokes. Whichever engine they choose, CLS drivers will have plenty of power under the bonnet, more than enough to ease them away swiftly from the traffic-light pack.
Sticking with the technical side, it is comforting to know that all CLS models are equipped with 7G-tronic automatic transmission with seven forward gears that ensure super-smooth changes. The AIRMATIC DC air suspension system is standard on 8-cylinder models of the CLS, optional on 6-cylinder versions.
Sports package
AMG body styling comes as standard on the CLS 350 and CLS 500 models, giving them an ultra-slick look. If extra oomph is required, the CLS 63 AMG is the option to choose. It comes with 19-inch triple spoke light alloy wheels, an AMG V8 power-plant and an ability to gallop from a standing start to 100 km/h in an awesomely fast 4.5 seconds.
With the CLS 63 AMG there are further sporty touches. The ergonomic steering wheel has aluminium speed paddles for operating the AMG speedshift, as well as a special instrument cluster. A further AMG Performance Package offers internally ventilated composite front disc brakes, a differential lock at the rear and forged 19-inch AMG twin-spoke light alloy wheels all round.
There are other ways for CLS owners to individualise their vehicles to reflect their own personal tastes. The exclusive Designo appointments range offers a wealth of attractive metal paint finishes, exquisite leather colours and high-quality trim elements. The distinctive topstitching in the centre seat panels and the Designo badge make clear design statements while the trim elements, in carefully selected wood or jet-black high sheen piano lacquer, create an exclusive ambience.
Sweet music
Other comfort-enhancers, such as Thermatic air-conditioning, the Audio 20 radio-CD system, come as standard. Music lovers might want to consider upgrading to the harman-kardon Logic 7 sound system that is the equal of many top-quality home hi-fi set ups.
Throughout the CLS there are technical innovations that are not immediately apparent, but become quickly appreciated. The keyless system for instance, saves valuable time, as does the button-operated engine starter. One feature that will be much appreciated in Hong Kong's space squeezed streets and multi-storey car parks, is the Parktronic electronic aid which gives an audible warning when the car behind, or the wall, is getting too close for comfort.
The comprehensive safety features give drivers and passengers peace of mind, knowing that if an accident does happen, they are traveling in superbly-protected automobiles.
It is safety-oriented details, as well as the overall big-picture magnificence of the new CLS, that make it so alluring. A casual look at the CLS's striking silhouette cannot fail to impress. But the only way to truly appreciate its blend of power, luxury and style, is to get behind the wheel, taking the CLS for a thorough road-test.
It soon becomes clear that this model is, indeed, a piece of performance art, a glorious metal sculpture that is far more endearing and enduring than some of the work on display at contemporary museums ...
