Depending on the kind and severity of the accident, various measures can be taken to prevent further damage being caused following an accident to assist in rescuing the occupants: If necessary, the engine can be turned off automatically and the fuel supply cut off. The hazard warning lights and emergency interior lights can be automatically activated, and the front side windows are partially lowered if necessary.
Steps have also been taken to assist the emergency services if rescue measures are required. The door locking mechanism can be released automatically, for example. Crash joints integrated between wing and door can speed up rescue work by enabling the doors to be opened more easily after a frontal collision. Cutting points are marked on the rear window to guide rescue teams if they need to cut through the C-pillar.
