BlueEFFICIENCY measures

BlueEFFICIENCY measures are comprehensive vehicle optimisations designed to save fuel and ease the burden on the environment. The E-Class Estate also combines the most efficient engines with optimum aerodynamics and energy management measures to keep fuel consumption to a minimum.

ECO start/stop function

The ECO start/stop function reduces fuel consumption and emissions by switching off the engine automatically when the vehicle is stationary (at traffic lights or in a traffic jam, for example).

Intelligent energy management

Significant savings can also be generated by a series of small contributions. With the aim of reducing fuel consumption for the E-Class Estate, Mercedes-Benz engineers examined the energy usage of all major assemblies and developed ways of getting them to work more economically.

Overview of efficient energy management measures:

  • Demand-oriented control: The response of the power steering pump is scaled down if pressure is reduced.
  • Efficient alternator management: Kinetic energy from braking and coasting is used to charge the battery.
  • More efficient fuel management: The pressure of the fuel pump is aligned with the precise volume of fuel needed at the time.
  • Air conditioning as required: If cooling is not needed, the compressor is automatically decoupled from the engine’s belt drive.

Efficiency technologies in the E-Class

Direct injection, increased compression and turbocharging (for V8 engines) in engines deliver outstanding torque, output and noise reduction figures. Innovative engine technology has significantly reduced emissions and fuel consumption compared with previous models.

Environmental certificate

Mercedes-Benz is the world’s only automotive brand to have been awarded Environmental Certificates in accordance with ISO standards. Certified vehicle models are subjected to strict statutory requirements and monitoring during development, production and recycling.
