The optionally available Intelligent Light System is, literally, a highlight of the E-Class. In dipped-beam mode this system, which is based on the bi-xenon headlamps with active light function, automatically adapts to the given traffic situation. ILS provides wider illumination of the road on country roads and a significantly longer headlamp range on motorways.

The adaptive High-Beam Assist is being offered for the first time in the new E-Class. This system allows earlier detection of pedestrians, bicyclists and obstructions than with conventional low beams. It reduces the dazzling effect on other road users and also optimises road lighting. Using a camera the headlamp range adjustment and high beams are regulated in such a way that the road is illuminated regardless of the driving situation and the preceding motorists. The high beam automatically switches on when no other road users are detected. A special feature is the gentle transition from one type of light to the other without an abrupt change in intensity.

The Intelligent Light System also includes enhanced foglamps, an active light function and a cornering light function. It thus combines all the latest developments in the field of lighting technology and marks a new milestone in active safety for evening and night-time driving.
